Aitutaki, Cook Islands

Regularly listed as one of the most romantic places on Earth, the view when approaching Aitutaki by air is one of the most stunning sights that travellers to this part of the Pacific will experience. Just 220 kilometres north and an easy 45-minute flight from Rarotonga, its lagoon is considered one of the most magnificent in the world.

A triangular shaped reef encompasses Aitutaki lagoon which is imbedded with massive coral heads – home to countless varieties of brilliantly coloured tropical fish and marine life. It is this spectacular, impossibly crystal-clear, turquoise lagoon that makes Aitutaki unrivalled in the Cook Islands for water activities. It is with good reason that snorkelling, fishing and diving are popular on this island paradise, as is simply finding the perfect beachside spot and not budging for anything other than a refreshing drink or delectable bite to eat. But the allure of Aitutaki doesn’t stop at the water’s edge.

The charm of this lovely place which has the unique characteristics of being both an island and an atoll continues on land. A leisurely walk to the summit of Aitutaki’s highest peak, Maungapu, might only reach an elevation of a little over 120 metres, but it delivers sweeping views that are sure to leave you breathless.  The rolling hills are a patchwork of banana plantations and coconut groves. The main island of Aitutaki is where some 2000 people live on approximately 16 sq. kilometres. With a blissfully relaxed lifestyle, this destination is the top of any bucket list in the South Pacific.

From the air or on the water, it will take your breath away.
